CHEST Clinicians on the Front Lines
CHEST clinicians are literally leading the fight against COVID-19. You probably knew this if you have been following our COVID-19 resources page (which I highly recommend). But the efforts of our CHEST members go beyond education and guidelines. CHEST clinicians are also treating patients with COVID-19, and while we cannot highlight the efforts of all of our members and leaders, Mangala Narasimhan, DO, FCCP, appeared on both 60 Minutes and on NBC News. Dr. Narasimhan is a vital volunteer for CHEST, and she is currently serving as the Chair of CHEST Live Learning committee. And it goes to show [Read more...]
How CHEST Analytics Is Helping in the Fight Against COVID-19
We are in the midst of a trying time period, especially for residents in and around New York City. CHEST and the CHEST Analytics data team have jumped in to assist the clinicians, health-care workers, and patients affected by the COVID-19 community spread there. CHEST Analytics created interactive dashboards to identify clinicians with critical care board certification and experience managing ventilators in the ICU within a 300-mile radius of New York City. This has allowed CHEST to issue a coordinated and targeted effort to start communications with clinicians who are the most likely to assist overwhelmed hospitals. While we [Read more...]
Games at CHEST Annual Meeting
Let’s change the rules on how people learn. If I had to define the mission statement of CHEST Games, it would be something like that or more simply—let’s make this fun. We have the perfect location for fun this year: New Orleans. It’s a town that even provides a term for what CHEST Games (formerly known as “GAMEs” [Games that Augment Medical Education]) represent to the overall experience for the CHEST Annual Meeting: lagniappe, a Louisiana French Creole word that means “a little something extra.” Although, at this point “little” is hardly the word that best describes Games. They are more like a huge bonus to all attendees, [Read more...]
The Robots are Coming: How Artificial Intelligence Will Shape the Future of Chest Medicine (and CHEST)
The robots are coming—at least according to this report, which states that Google created an artificial intelligence model that was able to detect lung cancer and cut back on false positives at a rate that beat experienced radiologists. As a fan of Star Wars, Sci-Fi, and innovation in general—I say, bring it on! It’s an exciting trend in medicine to see technology that has already changed the way we work and live enter into the world of health care. And this is not about replacing humans either (like what occurs in a lot of Sci-Fi ); this technology will potentially provide clinicians with the tools they can use to improve [Read more...]
The Top Ten Business Intelligence Trends of 2019
Tableau recently released a white paper on the Top Ten Business Intelligence Trends of 2019. There are a lot of terms that you will probably recognize as some current in buzz words such as artificial intelligence and natural data processing, but rather than going down that rabbit hole let’ start with something less abstract. The 7th point on the top ten list released by Tableau is: Data storytelling is the new language of corporations. And really that is a part of the inspiration for this blog. I wanted to write from time-to-time to tell some of the stories from taking CHEST’s data [Read more...]
